Our Story
Mr. M. A. Jacob, a man from Cochin, Kerala came to Chennai in the year 1939 and brought along with him Coir door mats which were manufactured in a home setup factory back in Kerala. He started by merely selling Coir door mats on his bicycle. He then bought a store in the year 1940 in the Evening Bazaar area of Chennai and added Coir Floorings as an additional product. This was the first store and it was called M.A.Jacob & Co.
During the 40s and 50s the store mainly catered the ships that came to Chennai port and needed refurnishing. The business also picked up among the foreigners who came in these ships and the Coir mats created from the fiber of coconuts were considered as a specialty product of India by them. The result of which made Mr. M.A.Jacob purchase four small shops to construct a bigger store to run his business smoothly.

In the 60s, his Son, Mr. Abraham Jacob noticed the potential of the soft furnishing business and expanded by adding Carpets, Rugs, Curtains, Upholstery and Vinyl to the already existing Coir Mats. The results were fruitful and by the mid 70s they went on to purchase another store in the neighboring area of Parrys and renovated the old Evening Bazaar store into a seven storeyed building- the first of its kind back then!
The business expanded as they continued to add furnishing merchandise as per the new styles and designs. At that point of time, this was the only store in the city offering Vinyl floorings which gained a vast customer base to the extent that during Diwali the shoppers queued up even outside the store to buy this product.
